The printing industry offers career opportunities that are both professionally and financially rewarding. This exciting, rapidly changing industry includes a variety of career paths. Employment opportunities include pre-press work, such as a process camera operator, desktop publishing, film assembler, platemaker; technical work, such as press technician, pressroom supervisor, material handler; sales work, such as customer service, estimator, scheduling; design work, including editor, designer and illustrator; and administrative positions, including; quality control and purchasing. "High Tech" defines the printing industry.
The Area Career Center Graphic Arts program is progressive innovative and creative. An industry advisory committee provides feedback ensuring that the program remains current with technology.
The Quad Cities are part of an area that is called "the printing capital of the world". Printing is the largest manufacturing industry in the state and second largest in the country.
Per capita, Illinois employs more people in the printing industry than any other state. More than 35,000 printing and publishing-related Illinois businesses employ more than 120,000 people.
Salaries vary by position and experience, some typical example are:
- Small press operator................. $10 per hr.
- Macintosh Ad Designer............. $12 per hr.
- Process camera operator........... $12 per hr.
- Large Web Press Helper........... $16 per hr.
- Large Web Press 1st Pressman. $36 per hr.
